"Focus on that first, and then on the return game sort of try your best, try to keep the ball in play, and go from there".

While he said that clinching a berth at this tournament is nearly like winning a title, we shouldn't expect the German to not fully turn up for his matches.

Roger Federer was in a jocular mood as he answered a question about Jack Sock's backside in a news conference after his 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory against the American on Sunday.

Some high-profile regulars are absent from the ATP Finals this year with Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka all out of action since Wimbledon due to injury.

It was the only break of serve in the match, although Federer was always a step ahead of his 25-year-old opponent, who possesses one of the hardest forehands in the game.

The 20-year-old German, ranked three in the world, was hot and cold against Croatia's Marin Cilic but, when it mattered most, he produced his best tennis to win 6-4 3-6 6-4.

Oklahoma State CB intercepts end zone pass without looking at the ball
Iowa State fell to 6-4, and the loss left it behind Oklahoma, TCU, Oklahoma State and West Virginia in the Big 12 at 4-3. Green held on to an interception with 32 seconds left to seal a 49-42 win over Iowa State on Saturday.

"Shortly afterwards Rafael Nadal was presented with the award for the year-end number one ranking - with the Spaniard scheduled to open his campaign for the only big prize to elude him on Monday against Belgium's David Goffin".

Sock is one of four players to qualify for the tournament for the first time.

Federer coolly took it to a tie-break, where he eased over the line to secure a deserved win. "Being here is an important thing but for me the most important thing is everything that happened to me this year, the tournaments, competing nearly every week with a very competitive level of tennis, being healthy until Paris", he said.

In a freaky moment in the middle of the first set, the rookie American, playing in the showpiece event for the first time, hit a poor drop shot, inviting the simplest of put-aways.

Chung, 21, was outplayed in the first set and was 3-1 behind in the second set before taking over to win 3-4 (5-7), 4-3 (7-2), 4-2, 4-2 to complete the five-day tournament unbeaten. I know it can be somewhat intriguing but at the same time the longer sets allow you to stretch a lead, it's more comfortable at times. Perhaps I should have aimed at it - the target was bigger than the down-the-line court I had! "Can't expect to play your best against the best players in the world in that first match".
