GameStop halts its unlimited used game rental program

While there isn't a specific reason for the hold-up, according to Kotaku via GameStop employees, the company's antiquated POS system wasn't simply equipped to handle it.

The plan wasn't fully scraped, per those sources, as they were supposed to store the materials in the back room, indicating they would be put to use in the future. For $60, you can pick up any pre-owned game and return to the store to swap it out for a new one as often as you like for a period of six months. According to a spokesperson for the company, the suspension was "based on a few program limitations we have identified".

But according to a report from Kotaku, just days before the service's full launch on November 19th, GameStop has chose to "temporarily pause" the roll out of the new service.

However, that is all in the past tense, because after a recent soft launch PowerPass has been suspended. "We feel this is the right thing to do for now to ensure we are able to provide our guests an exceptional service", GameStop told Kotaku. And while your subscription is technically now over if you're one of those who signed up, it's not all bad news.

The school has also changed the way it regulates fraternities and sororities, assuming more control over disciplinary procedures. Piazza in the basement video... never once obtained any of those drinks for himself", she told reporters Monday.

The program went through a soft launch in some locations earlier this month, with its full rollout to follow later.

Update: Asked for comment, GameStop replied to Polygon with this statement. As well, those existing PowerPass customers are also being given a free pre-owned game to make up for the spontaneous change of plans. There's no timing yet for the rental program's return, but it doesn't sound like GameStop has any intention of making the temporary hold more permanent.

Per Kotaku, anyone who already bought into GamePass can bring back their pass and any game they rented for a full refund.
