  • Common sense has prevailed P Chidambaram says a day after GST Council reduces tax on 178 items

"Reduction of GST rates for 213 items should be seen just as a beginning and the government should be ready to reduce the rates of more products to take burden off the people".

Chidambaram tweeted "Thank You Gujarat" after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced a big overhaul of new national tax GST on Friday.

He said the step of lowering of GST on all types of restaurants to 5 per cent is a "huge relief compared to even the pre-GST era" and will "warm millions of hearts in urban India" and would expand the "fan base of the Prime Minister".

As the GST Council slashed rates on several items from 28 per cent to 18 per cent, the main Opposition Congress sought to take credit for the move.

He had said, "Congress is vindicated".

"When GST rate is capped at 18%, this government would have learnt its lesson belatedly", Chidambaram said in a series of Tweets posted late Friday night and Saturday morning.

RSS worker hacked to death in Thrissur, BJP blames CPM
Infuriated with the recent killings, the state's BJP and RSS workers have called for a complete shutdown on Monday in Guruvayur. The ABVP had held a "Kerala Chalo" Maha rally in Thiruvananthapuram with the slogan "Marxism is Terror" on Saturday.

Crediting his party the Congress for pushing for GST Rate cut, Chidambaram said "Congress is vindicated".

Soon after the GST Council had made a decision to reduce rates for 178 mass consumption items, Chidambaram had taken to Twitter to announce that his party stood vindicated.

The Congress has been batting for capping all taxes under the GST regime at 18%, a demand rejected by the government. "It is our territory, we will go there", she said in a reply to a query on China's reaction on her visit to Arunachal Pradesh. He had also taken a dig at the BJP leadership alleging that the decision to bring down rates was keeping the Gujarat elections in mind.

In a series of tweets after Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced that the GST Council has chose to slash tax slabs for 178 items from 28 percent to 18 percent, Chidambaram said that the rate has been "capped" at 18 percent.

He added, "Congress finance ministers had no specific role in the decisions..."

In effect, the Council, in its 23rd meet on Friday, cut rates on 178 goods. "This is typical of the Congress's pettiness and pusillanimity".
