"Although Guru Nanak Dev's Gurpurab is a day to celebrate and enjoy, we must introspect and ask ourselves that how much of Guru Nanak's principles and teachings we have adopted in our lives", he said.

"During his lifetime, Guru Nanak travelled extensively promoting equality, diversity, compassion and tolerance, which became the core principles of Sikhism".

Braving the early morning chill, scores of devotees thronged gurdwaras across Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh to offer prayers on the occasion of "Guru Purab", the birth anniversary of the first Sikh guru, Nanak Dev.

Soon after their arrival, the pilgrims left for Janum Asthan of Baba Guru Nanak at Nankana Sahib. His teachings remain a source of inspiration for Sikhs around the world.

Sikhism was founded in the 15th century in the Punjab, an area straddling the border between Pakistan and India, by Guru Nanak and has had 10 successive gurus.

Guru Nanak Birthday or Gurpurab, one of the most important festivals of the Sikh community has arrived and there is a feeling of auspiciousness, positivity amongst the people to mark the occasion and seek blessings of their god.

It was reported by the media sources that the sangat will visit Gurdwara Panja Sahib (Hassan Abdal), Gurdwara Dehra Sahib (Lahore), Gurdwara Rori Sahib (Eminabad) and Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib (Narowal), before returning on November 11.

The celebrations last for more than a week during which sacred rituals are performed at the Gurdwara and candies and langars are offered, irrespective of religious orientation.
