A soldier and a militant were killed and two security personnel injured on Tuesday in a gunfight between security forces and militants in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district. Sensing that they were trapped, the hiding terrorists fired at the security forces, trigerring an encounter which continues.

A police official said Bhat was from the volatile Palhalan area.

The other trapped militants managed to escape into a jungle area.

During the fierce gun fight, a militant belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen was killed.

They said the injured soldier later succumbed to injuries.

The slain militant, he said, was a B. Tech pass-out and was associated with Hizb.

The operation was going on when last reports came in.

A police official said that no exchange of fire was their between militants and the government forces. "A hideout was busted and blankets were seized from the spot", said the police.

He said another encounter broke out in Laam village of Tral in Awantipora area of Pulwama after the militants fired upon a search party of security forces.

Authorities suspended Internet services in south Kashmir areas and ordered the suspension of train service for the day after the gunfight started.

All trains on this route ran as per schedule, he added. Railway services were disrupted in Kulgam and Anantnag.
