Arkansas has fired athletic director Jeff Long after almost 10 years at the school. Sports historian and author Evin Demirel said the team's record coupled with lagging ticket sales factored in to the chancellor's decision.

Long is known for firing Razorback football coach Bobby Petrino after an alleged extramarital affair with a former Arkansas volleyball player.

Long previously headed the Athletic Department at the University of Pittsburgh. "Long has accepted the invitation and he will serve for the remainder of this season".

The university will honor the provisions of Long's contract, which now runs through June 30, 2022. "We're trying to put ourselves in the best position ever to have a great Wednesday practice to get to Saturday", said Bielema.

Senior associate athletic director Julie Cromer Peoples was appointed interim director of athletics pending a search for a new hire.
