Ride-hailing startup Lyft has unveiled its intensions for expanding outside the United States for the first time just weeks after landing a sizeable $1bn led by tech giant and Google owner Alphabet.

"Lyft has grown considerably this past year, and Toronto was a no brainer for the company's first global launch".

Lyft service will be available in Toronto by the holidays. "We expect that to happen, and we see it as a city that really shares the value that we have at Lyft - focusing on people taking care of people, treating people well, treating people with mutual respect and promoting both inclusion and diversity". The company will begin driver recruitment today. The company is also beginning to sign up potential drivers now in advance of its rollout of its service. The company is appealing London's decision to pull its license after the city's transport authority said Uber was not "fit and proper" to operate there.

RSS worker hacked to death in Thrissur, BJP blames CPM
Infuriated with the recent killings, the state's BJP and RSS workers have called for a complete shutdown on Monday in Guruvayur. The ABVP had held a "Kerala Chalo" Maha rally in Thiruvananthapuram with the slogan "Marxism is Terror" on Saturday.

In September, the province announced it would renew a pilot project agreement for one more year, but added new provisions that included 35 hours of mandatory training, police background checks and a vehicle inspection every year. But Lyft won't say which city is next.

In addition to Lyft, another ride-hailing service called Facedrive launched last week in Toronto.

The move follows the controversial launch of rival Uber in Toronto a few years ago, which saw protests by taxi drivers.
