  • Evra is escorted from the pitch after appearing to kick out at a Marseille fan

Ahead of the Europa League tie with Vitoria Guimaraes, Evra got into an argument with a travelling fan before a kick was aimed at the supporter's head.

Marseille have announced that they have sacked Patrice Evra for kicking a club supporter last week.

Shortly before Marseille confirmed the club had terminated Evra's contract, it was confirmed the player had been handed a seven-month ban from Uefa competitions, as well as a €10,000 fine.

Marseille players were going through their paces in a warm-up before the meeting with Vitoria Guimaraes when a group of fans in the stand behind the goal approached, with the incident then spiralling out of control. He played an important role in reviving the team and in the improvement of results.

16 killed, 7 missing in boat capsize near Vijayawada; govt announces compensation
At least 16 people were killed and seven more are missing after an overloaded boat capsized on a river in India, police said. However, a few passengers wearing life jackets managed to swim ashore with the help of trained swimmers and local fishermen.

Now a free agent, Evra is in search for a new club to go, and since he can not aim at top-class outfits, Newcastle United fans have now started urging the Frenchman to join them.

Club president Jacques-Henri Eyraud added: "Today, there is sadness".

Marseille's American owner Frank McCourt had described Evra's behaviour as "unacceptable" and "not something that we can tolerate", while fans held up a giant banner before last Sunday's game against Caen saying: "We don't want you in our colours anymore".
