Missouri attorney general launches an anti-trust investigation against Google

  • Hawley's office says U.S. regulators were wrong not to pursue legal action over potential antitrust violations

Google has largely steered clear of antitrust problems in the U.S. That's not the case in Europe, where the company faces a fine of about $2.7 billion over the display of its shopping ads.

Missouri's attorney general says his office will investigate Google for potential violations of the state's antitrust and consumer-protection laws.

Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley's office has issued a subpoena to internet giant Google in connection with an investigation into the company's business practices.

Hawley's investigation seeks to determine whether Google violated Missouri's antitrust laws by scraping content from competing websites, bumping down competitors in search results and listing Google-owned sites first.

Consumers spend record $25bn in China's Singles Day shopping spree
At just past the halfway mark, the headline gross merchandise volume swept past last year's dollar total just shy of $18 billion. Consumer spending in China accounted for 40 percent of the GDP, compared with nearly 70 percent for the U.S.

"It is a very strong concern that we have potentially in Google a company that is gathering all sorts of personal confidential information and then using that personal confidential information for profit", says Hawley.

The company operates "in a highly competitive and dynamic environment", Patrick Lenihan said in an emailed statement.

"When a company has access to as much consumer information as Google does, it's my duty to ensure they are using it appropriately", Hawley told the Star in a statement.

We've reached out to Google with a request for comment and will update when we hear back. But the Federal Trade Commission settled with Google in 2013 and said it didn't find any reasons to impose radical changes on how the company runs its Internet search engine.
