PlayStation Trophies Can Now Be Used To Buy Games (With A Catch)

Before you get too carried away, it's not much.

PlayStation nation, your Trophies are about to become a lot more than simple bragging rights - an update to the Sony Rewards program means you can now amass points just for earning the PlayStation version of Achievements.

Get 10 Platinum Trophies while you game and earn 1,000 points. A platinum trophy is worth 100 points; gold is worth 10 and silver is worth 1.

The program does have some limitations as in that it is only available in the United States as of now and that any points or trophies earned before opting for the program will not be counted towards your actual earned credits. Unfortunately, this isn't some kind of retroactive deal where the trophies you've already earned count toward credit, so only trophies you earn after you link your PSN and Sony Rewards accounts will count. Those points can in turn become PSN credit vouchers, allowing you to purchase games, DLC, TV shows, and movies. So the next time you're grinding to get that last silver in Ratchet & Clank while your loved one looks on in bored disgust, you can say your doing it to get digital copy of The Mask of Zoro they've always wanted.

Real coach Zinedine Zidane rested midfielder Luka Modric, while slotting Marco Asensio in attack along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema .

This is now only available to gamers in the United States, and trophies will only start counting after you sign up. Maybe you have a plethora of easy games to platinum on hand that will let you earn some quick cash.

Microsoft Xbox boss Phil Spencer heard about it, and has tweeted a very gracious comment about Sony's new program. Sony and PS3 did not include a trophy system at launch but instead added it in a few years later.

Outside of perhaps a cool helmet for an avatar or a new background theme for your menus, console gaming trophies (achievements if you speak Xbox) have been more about personal satisfaction than anything else, but that's changing for PlayStation users.
