Tension on the Korean peninsula rose last month as North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump exchanged war-like threats and insults over the North's nuclear and missile development program. Following his "lunatic remarks" made in September, Trump "made his conceived attempt yet again to alienate our people from the government and keep up rivalry between the DPRK and the global society", the spokesman continued.

The North Korean spokesman said nothing would deter Pyongyang from pursuing its nuclear weapons programme.

On Friday he warned world leaders gathered in the Vietnamese resort city of Danang that the Asia-Pacific region "must not be held hostage to a dictator's twisted fantasies".

The outburst came as Trump nears the tail end of his sweep through Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines that has seen him rail against the North's nuclear ambitions and deliver his "America First" vision of global trade.

Instead the threat "pushes us to speed up the efforts to accomplish the great cause of completing the state nuclear force", the statement said, dismissing Trump's tour of the region as a "business trip".

United States and South Korea on Saturday started joint naval four-day drills to warn the North Korea.

Shortly after that speech, North Korean officials told CNN, "We don't care about what that mad dog may utter", referring to Trump. Trump has traded insults and threats with Kim in the past amid escalating tensions over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.

Trump will attend a state banquet on Saturday before a welcoming and deal-signing ceremony on Sunday morning.

According to the U.S. Navy, it is the first three-carrier exercise in the Western Pacific since 2007.

During Saturday's summit, Moon and Xi also agreed to quickly normalize bilateral exchanges in all sectors, Yoon added, repeating what was said in the agreement announced last month when the two countries agreed to end a year-long standoff over the deployment of a USA anti-missile system.

"The weapons you are acquiring are not making you safer, they are putting your regime in grave danger", Trump said about North Korea during an address at South Korea's National Assembly in Seoul.

Seoul and Washington have recently carried out a series of drills to show off their military heft in response to the North's saber-rattling, such as its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on September 3 and a series of missile launches.
