World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2017 (November 13 to 19) is a World Health Organization global event around one of the most pressing challenges to health care.

New Zealand is joining the global battle to raise awareness around appropriate use of antibiotics.

"The misuse of antibiotics over the past few decades has contributed to an alarming increase in bacterial resistance, which has since 2014 continuously been highlighted by the WHO as one of the biggest threats to public health today", says Dr. Paul Soko Executive Head of Clinical Services and Quality at Life Healthcare Group.

"The plan comes from the work of the Ministry of Health, Ministry for Primary Industries, and the human health, animal health, agricultural and wider scientific communities".

NICE says stewardship programmes - where healthcare providers are taught specifically when and where to use antibiotic treatment - could slow down the development of medicine resistance in diseases.

"Many young people appear to lack knowledge about antibiotics and their objective", he said. But it's also about giving them some practical advice that will help them, or their child, feel better - getting good rest, ensuring adequate fluid intake, and advising on proper pain relief.

Medically important antimicrobials that are not now used in food production should not be used in the future in food production including in food-producing animals or plants.

"We have patients undergoing surgery, and chemotherapy, and their immune systems are weakened".

"It is important for people to understand that if they are feeling under the weather and see their GP or a nurse, antibiotics may not be prescribed if they are not effective for their condition, but they should expect to have a full discussion about how to manage their symptoms".

Stegelmeier said as he and his fellow students participate in Antibiotic Awareness Week, he hopes students will become informed of proper antibiotic use.

"We are misusing antibiotics by using them when it is not needed (for the common cold or viral infection), not completing the prescribed dose and using them to promote growth and productivity in agriculture", Stegelmeier said.
