The conference began with women placing 14 white roses on a table before a photo of the victims of the Montreal massacre.

On this day in 1989, 14 women were shot and killed at Ecole Polytechnique by gunman Marc Lepine, 14 other people were injured in the attack.

During a trip to China, Trudeau took part in a candle-lighting ceremony at the Canadian Consulate in Guangzhou to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

White and a group of engineering students are creating a monument to honour victims of violence against women - this year focusing on missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people.

It was also a call to action to help put an end to violence against women.

"Now I think it has to be attitudes to women and men being proud of changing their attitudes". The date also falls within the annual 16 Days of Activism campaign which begins on November 25 with the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women and runs until December 10 with Human Rights Day.

Violence against women and girls is not just a women's issue. A victim, her mother says, of someone with a violent past who targeted women.

The 14 women slain in this horrific act of misogyny and gender-based violence were Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte and Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz.

On Dec. 6, 1989, an armed man entered the École Polytechnique in Montreal.

Shelley Yeo is the assistant executive director at ANOVA and tells 980 CFPL community involvement is key to fighting violence against women.

"We as individuals have a responsibility to respect everyone regardless of their gender", said Nagpal.

"Even though it happened in Montreal 28 years ago, it's something that's still very much happening in society today", said Kendra Strong-Garcia from the YWCA.

The global campaign, wrapping up December 10th, began in New Jersey and unites individuals, organizations, activists and government leaders to take a stand against gender-based violence.

Approximately every six days, a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner.
