After nine weeks in cognitive behavioral therapy, all 12 teens with addiction who choose to participate in both the study and the therapy showed decreased or normalized levels of GABA in their brains.

Previous research has found GABA to be involved in motor vision and control and regulation of various brain functions, including anxiety.

Dr. Hyung Suk Seo, of Korea University, warns that there's more danger in this than just the potential of wasting a lot of time sharing memes and viral videos. And the researchers have claimed that higher the addiction, higher were the symptoms of diseases like insomnia, depression and anxiety.

Researchers from the Korea University in Seoul, South Korea used magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to gain unique insight into the brains of smartphone - and internet - addicted teenagers. There could be more than ten reasons why people use a smartphone, but a recent study might make people think about ditching their digital friends altogether.

The study has not been peer-reviewed, but the findings do align with other studies that indicate smartphone and internet addiction can harm the mind. Meanwhile, the increased presence of GABA can result in the number of side effects such as anxiety and drowsiness.

Though they state that more study is required, the researchers believe that this change in brain chemistry in Internet and smartphone addicts could be linked to anomalies in the emotional and cognitive neural network. The Pew Research Center study was presented to the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) on November 30. The therapy involved weekly 75-minute sessions of mindfulness exercises, including recognizing internet impulses, expressing emotions, and finding alternative activities.

Their dependence was measured using standardized questionnaires. Questions were based on the extent to which the use of Internet and smartphone impacts daily routines, social life, feelings, productivity and sleeping patterns. The higher the score, the more severe the addiction was.

These were matched for biological gender and age with other 19 participants without smartphone addiction (the controls). Researchers said that they need to continue to study the clinical implication of this addiction, mainly because the study was made with a small group of people. These increased ratios of Glx and GABA were significantly correlated with the clinical scales of smartphone and internet addictions, depression and anxiety.

Participants also completed tests to measure the severity of their addiction.

MRS scans are used to track concentrations of biochemicals in the brain, and are often used to study changes wrought by brain tumors, strokes, mood disorders and Alzheimer's disease.

This study should be followed up in a larger group of participants with scans tracking more brain chemicals, the experts said.

Nonetheless, it is a matter that needs to be understood to prevent it. The rates of internet addiction in young people could be as high as 18 percent.
