  • Apple announces App of the Year, Game of the Year and Best of 2017 top charts

While Google recently revealed its "top apps of 2017" section, Apple too has now announced its "Best of 2017" apps and games.

On iPad and its larger screen it is perhaps no surprise that a creative app, illustration app Procreate, was the year's top seller.

It's also hardly shocking to see crowd pleasers and essentials like Bitmoji, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Google Maps or Netflix among the iOS App Store's most popular 2017 apps. Apple says its app of the year for iPhone is Calm, a meditation and sleep app, and Splitter Critters is 2017's iPhone game of the year.

Affinity Photo is a professional photo editing tool for the iPad.

Snap may have had a rough year, but you wouldn't know it from the App Store charts.

Meanwhile, Super Mario Run was the top free iPhone game of 2017, followed by 8 Ball Pool, Snake VS Block, Ballz, Word Cookies!, Subway Surfers, Episode ft. NPR's "Fresh Air" remained in the top podcast spot for 2017, with Apple noting that daily news podcasts like New York Times' "The Daily" and NPR's "UP First" also made the charts, along with true crime podcasts being popular with listeners.

Talking about apps, the App Store editors have identified four breakout trends in app culture for 2017. Apple features augmented reality, online realtime mobile games, environmentally-minded apps for sustainable living, and apps to help with parenting.

Finally, iTunes U saw a bumper year, with computer science courses being amongst the most popular, with the top three apps focusing on learning to code and developing apps - certainly a handy thing for iTunes to teach users.

Drake's More Life was the No. 1 album of the year, Apple said, while Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" was the most listened-to song. Despite only releasing November 10, Taylor Swift's new album Reputation has already shot up to third place, hinting TSwift's new album has even more success to come. Disney's Moana was the most-watched movie, with "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" and "Wonder Woman" coming in as runners-up. Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, The Big Bang Theory and Rick and Morty topped the iTunes TV charts this year.

If you want to see the full lists, just load up iTunes or the App Store and you'll see it all on the front page.
