Just hours after Senator Al Franken announced he was resigning amid sexual harassment allegations - Republican Rep. Trent Franks of Arizona says he is also leaving his job next month after an ethics investigation was opened against him.

The House Ethics Committee has requested Greene to cooperate with the investigation and appear before the panel.

House Speaker Paul Ryan was told of the misconduct allegations on November 29, his office said, adding that Ryan believed the accusations were "credible" and that he told Franks he should resign.

"Last night, my wife was admitted to the hospital in Washington, D.C. due to an ongoing ailment", he said in a statement released Friday.

Franks announced his resignation Thursday in anticipation of claims against him.

The Associated Press reports that Franks denies ever physically intimidating, coercing or attempting to have sexual contact with any member of his congressional staff.

Franks went on to detail how he and his wife had "long struggled with infertility" and suffered three miscarriages.

Franks, who has served in Congress since 2002, is a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus and has often taken strong anti-abortion stands.

On Thursday, the House Ethics Committee said it would create a special subcommittee to investigate Franks for conduct "that constitutes sexual harassment and/or retaliation for opposing sexual harassment".

Also today: A former Franks aide told the AP the congressman offered her $5 million to have his baby.

While Franks was on the floor Thursday voting on a stopgap funding bill and other measures, he appeared to be consoled by a number of fellow Republicans. He faced accusations from women of improper sexual behavior that he's contesting.

The deep-red 8th District, northwest of Phoenix, supported President Donald Trump by 21 points in 2016, according to calculations by Daily Kos Elections.

A spokesman for Franks would not comment on whether the congressman offered aides money in exchange to act as surrogates.
