Google blocks YouTube access from Amazon media devices

In a retaliatory move sure to upset viewers, Google is halting YouTube Streaming to Echo Show and Fire TV devices. Our source says that Google would like to have more of its hardware products like Chromecast and Google Home available through Amazon, but the company has long avoided selling products that compete with its own hardware initiatives - that's why you can't get an Apple TV on Amazon, for example. Google added that it was working with Amazon to resolve the issue, but it did not elaborate on what changes it wanted Amazon to make to the Echo Show YouTube app. For its part, Amazon, through a spokeswoman, said that Alphabet'sGoogle unit is "setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website. We hope to resolve this with Google as soon as possible".
This latest development is the escalation of a long-simmering conflict that first bubbled to the surface in September, when Google started to block Amazon's implementation of YouTube on the Echo Show, the company's latest voice-enabled speaker with integrated display. The latest proof of that came yesterday afternoon when Google revealed YouTube will disappear from Fire TV tablets, streaming devices and television sets.
"We've been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other's products and services", Google has been telling the press. YouTube has more than one billion users worldwide, close to one third of total internet users, and the inability to watch it on Amazon devices is a major inconvenience.
These are two companies who usually have the upper hand on the negotiating table, and probably don't like the fact they have found their equal this time around.
The bickering between Google and Amazon has been going on several years as they have ratcheted up the competition with each other. But as Google ramps up its voice assistant game, and Amazon pushes ahead with Prime video, these two are just hurting their customers' experiences.
Amazon's voice-controlled gadgets have outsold Google's so far, according to a study by research firm eMarketer from earlier this year.
