Google shuts chrome apps section for Mac and Windows users

  • Google is killing Chrome Apps for desktops for good

As the company had stated in a blog post, this was one step in a process to shut down standalone Chrome Apps that nobody really downloaded from their browser anymore.

The company explained its intention to do away with apps a year ago, and as we noted back in August when it officially announced its plans, only about 1 percent of Windows, macOS and Linux users actually used Apps, so they've gotta go. Apps will be gone in Q1 of 2018 and it'll be Q2 or Q3 before Chrome rolls out PWA desktops. However, Apps will still be available on Chrome OS-powered devices, like Chromebooks, and they're accessible via direct links to their Chrome Web Store pages. However, Chrome users who just browse the web will still be able to download and install extensions and themes. Existing apps will continue to work and receive updates.

Google's replacement for Chrome apps will come in the form of what it refers to as PWAs or progressive web apps. Users won't be required to install any subsidiary tool for remote access except for the Chrome extension.

Google says it is "roughly targeting mid-2018" for PWA desktop apps.

Roger Goodell receives extension from the NFL
The memo also cites the existence of a "nearly unanimous consensus" among the owners in favor of finalizing the extension now. All 32 owners unanimously granted the Compensation Committee permission in May to negotiate an extension with Goodell.

The Chrome browser will continue to load packaged and hosted apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux beyond the previously announced deprecation timeline. These PWAs, that launched earlier this year on Android, will effectively blur the line between websites and installed software.

While Progressive Web Apps are being held up by many in the industry as the next wave of application development, they appear to be a solution looking for a problem which was already solved by running Android apps on ChromeOS.

This concept is already working on Android - via the Samsung browser, Firefox and Opera.

With this new web portal, users will be required to login to remotedesktop.google.com and connect remote devices.
