Google announced plans to crack down on Android applications that fail to warn users when they are collecting personal data.

Google is introducing significant changes to how it enforces its Unwanted Software Policy, which should result in better privacy and transparency for the world's two billion Android users. "As part of this expanded enforcement, Google Safe Browsing will show warnings on apps and on websites leading to apps that collect a user's personal data without their consent".

Stanton explains that developers will need to inform and prompt users how their apps handle device data and personal data such as phone numbers or emails, as well as provide their own privacy policy in the app.

Developers of apps that collect user data for purposes unrelated to the application's core function will now have to spell out why they are collecting the data and how they plan on using it. Users will need to provide their consent before the application can be used. This covers anything from location data to crash reports, which often include a list of apps the user has installed. To be able to transmit that data, the user must be shown a prominent disclosure and give affirmative consent. The alerts will pop up on app store and webpages that lead to the offending apps. Additionally, the app also features a big button at the top of the screen that will cut down all the background consumption of data on your device. Any app that collects personal data will be subject to the new rules. Google's help centre. Advice on making remedial actions will be available inside the facility. App developers caught by the new Safe Browsing warnings can request an app review on the App Verifications and Appeals support page.

On its blog post, Google said, "These requirements apply to apps in Google Play and non-Play app markets".
