  • Playwright Israel Horovitz Faces Harassment Allegations

One of the accusers, Maddie Corman, said she was just 16 when he pressed her against the wall and forced himself on her. She said when she was 19 and working on a summer fellowship at the Gloucester Stage Company in Massachusetts, Horovitz drove her to his house, locked her in, and raped her.

The younger Horovitz's response is also detailed in the report, and it may surprise some who believe that the entertainment industry remains a "boys' club" that sticks together in the face of sex abuse accusations.

In 1991, when Frédérique Giffard was 16 and an au pair for Mr. Horovitz, she said he groped her breasts and placed her hand on his erect penis. Mr. Horovitz then led her to his bedroom, where she said he raped her.

She was 21 at the time but she had known him since she was a girl, the paper said. Many say he forcibly kissed them and grabbed their breasts.

Mestecky said in an email to NBC News that she "confirmed the truth as stated in the article".

Zinn said Thursday he first learned of the 1993 allegations against Horovitz early in November, when Bill Marx, the former freelance theater writer who authored the initial Boston Phoenix stories, reposted them on the Art-ery page on the website of Boston-based radio station WBUR.

He founded the theater in 1979 and served as art director through 2006. "Someone was sacked, and this is their revenge".

In the Times piece, Adam is quoted as saying he believes the women.

He also told Marx in 1993 the accusers were "tightly wound, you know what I mean".

"We deeply regret that past complaints were mishandled". The allegations were subsequently dismissed from the board's president at the time.

In a statement to the Times, Horovitz claimed he has "a different memory of some of these events".

"To hear that I have caused pain is profoundly upsetting, as is the idea that I might have crossed a line with anyone who considered me a mentor", he added. "And I stand behind the women that made them".

"It is of the utmost importance that our theatre home be a safe space for everyone: our actors, artistic and production teams, staff, volunteers, apprentices, and patrons", reads the statement. His most recent work to appear at Gloucester Stage was "Out of the Mouths of Babes", which ran August 11 through September 2 as part of the theater's 2017 summer season.

The 78-year-old has directed over 70 plays and one movie.
