  • Deutsche Bank subpoenaed to provide Trump accounts' data

The special counsel's office spent $3.2 million in its first four months probing ties between President Donald Trump's top advisors and Russian Federation, according to a release issued Tuesday by the Department of Justice.

In June, the German bank rejected requests for account records by Democrats in the US House of Representatives to provide details of the president's finances. Russian Federation has denied meddling in the election and Trump has called the special counsel's investigation a "witch hunt".

Mueller sought records from Deutsche Bank, a source familiar with the subpoena told ABC News. They certainly have the power to do so, should Mueller deem it necessary: The order establishing the investigation authorizes him to pursue "any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump", as well as "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation".

Mr Trump has repeatedly denied any financial connections with Russian Federation.

The bank said additionally in a statement that "Deutsche Bank takes its legal obligations seriously and remains committed to cooperating with authorized investigation into this matter".

He says he's confirmed "this with the bank and other sources".

Deutsche Bank, which is one of the Trump Organisation's major lenders on its real estate projects, said it would not comment on any of its clients.

Deutsche Bank has been one of the few major banks willing to regularly lend to Trump, who alienated large banks in NY with his past financial troubles.

So far, the special counsel has charged four people as part of the investigation including former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

As Mueller's investigation unfolds, Trump has gone on the offensive.

Previous special counsel investigations, including probes of President Bill Clinton in the late 1990s, have also spent millions over a few months' time.

During a photo opportunity with senators at the White House on Tuesday, Mr Trump declined to answer shouted questions from reporters about whether Mr Mueller had crossed a line by asking Deutsche Bank for information.
