Approximately 20 protestors were outside the Verizon Store on Mangrove in Chico Thursday morning in advance of next week's vote by the Federal Communications Commission to repeal its net neutrality regime.

The protest is organized by Progressive Manchester.

Net neutrality means Internet service providers should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source, and without favoring or blocking particular products or websites.

Verizon and Comcast lobbyists are pressing to kill Net Neutrality. These net neutrality rules were passed in 2015, and have broad support from groups ranging from civil liberty organizations to internet giants like Google.

Net neutrality refers to the concept of internet service providers, or ISPs, treating all internet traffic equally.

"We're just concerned about the corporations taking over the internet", said Sue Bolesh when asked what brought her out to protest.

Facebook Creates Messenger for Kids
If two children want to be friends on Messenger Kids , that friendship has to be approved by a parent for each child. Facebook says the app complies with United States child online privacy laws and contains no adverts.

"If they take away net neutrality you will lose free speech", said Jane Redmond, a proponent of the current net neutrality policy.

"I'm seeing real democracy emerging through the internet", said Michael T. Owen. Mr. Owen expects that whatever happens, net neutrality will be ended.

Demonstrators are sharing scenes from Thursday's protests on social media with the hashtags #StoptheFCC and #NetNeutrality.

Opponents of net neutrality noted that its elimination has benefits including giving consumers of the Internet more options, allowing them to pare down their choices and perhaps save money in the process.

The biggest protest in the nation was at the Verizon store on 42nd Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. So, [our protest] is two-fold.

A district sales manager at Russell Cellular Verizon declined to comment, or to give his name.
