The seemingly never-ending investigation by the NCAA into Ole Miss athletics is finally over - and the football program took the brunt of the penalties.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions has also put the program on probation for 4 years, docked 13 scholarships and levied a $179,000 fine, Sports Illustrated said.

"It is simply not warranted and based on fundamental flaws in the NCAA case and how the investigation was conducted", Vitter said.

Vitter expressed outrage that past NCAA cases involving Ole Miss factored into the current sanctions.

Lewis acting as the star witness against Ole Miss didn't sit well with Rebel athletic director Ross Bjork. "We do have institutional control, as those controls are how we discovered numerous violations", he said.

In addition to the postseason ban and loss of scholarships, the NCAA will vacate wins where ineligible players were active, but the exact wins are not known at the time and are being assessed by the university. Bjork said no players have made him aware of their desire to transfer yet.

Former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze will be suspended for two conference games during the 2018 season if he's employed as a head coach at another school. He is free to work as a coordinator or assistant coach at another program. Instead, it gave Freeze only a small penalty (a two-game suspension) that basically goes away following the 2018 season. A show-cause penalty means any schools wishing to hire the coaches must appear before the NCAA committee on infractions to do so. Luke, who played at the school in the mid-90s, was hired as the program's permanent coach on Monday. "However, the student-athlete's institution must be notified of the recruitment and may establish reasonable restrictions related to the contact (e.g., no visits during class time), provided such restrictions do not preclude the opportunity for the student-athlete to discuss transfer possibilities with the other institution".

Additionally, the program was placed on three years probation, through November 30, 2020, as well as recruiting restrictions that include the reduction of official and unofficial visits. And yet, in instance after instance as outlined by the NCAA from Laremy Tunsil's loaner cars to how recruits were getting to campus for unofficial visits to hotel room stays to free meals and gear, Ole Miss was sloppy at best and outright devious at worst about how they were getting things done.
