  • Quentin Tarantino has an idea for a Star Trek movie and J.J. Abrams is assembling a writers room

Cue theKill Bill sirens: Quentin Tarantino might be planning to put his distinctive stamp on the Star Trek franchise.

Director Quentin Tarantino reportedly proposed an original idea for a new "Star Trek" movie and is working with J.J. Abrams to write it.

Tarantino's next film, about the Manson family murders back in the '60s, is now being prepped at Sony Pictures, but if the Star Trek pitch goes well, Tarantino might be asked to direct the film, with Abrams set to produce. Should it work out, Tarantino may also take on directing duties, with Abrams - who is now prepping Star Wars: Episode IX - serving as producer. He's also said on numerous occasions that he plans to call time on his directing career once he reaches ten movies, so perhaps he's looking to check the box before he calls it a day. No other development on that project has been made public.

The Django Unchained filmmaker previously hinted at his desire to take on the Star Trek franchise, telling Vulture in 2015, "I'm not really interested in doing a sci-fi film, but there's one thing in particular that I would be interested in".

But Tarantino has worked on projects associated with existing franchises in the past, though that's been limited to television. The obvious one would be "City on the Edge of Forever", but there's a reason everyone would go to that. "It actually could bear a two hour treatment".

Not only is Abrams tied up with the final installment of the new Star Wars trilogy, Tarantino is hard at work on his next movie, which will reportedly deal in some way with Charles Manson's murder spree in the late 1960s.

The film, which was slated to be released on August 9, 2019, the 50th anniversary of actress Sharon Tate's death, has no set cast.
