Samsung begins mass production on 512 GB flash storage

  • Galaxy S9 could use Samsung’s new 512 GB UFS storage

This is particularly nice as apps get larger and photos/videos get crispier, but soon you'll be able to pick up a phone (at least from Samsung) with a whopping 512GB of storage out of the box. Imagine pairing a ton of storage alongside Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 system-on-chip (SoC), or Samsung's recently announced Exynos 9810 (Samsung typically uses two SoCs for its flagship phones, tapping its own silicon for models that ship internationally and Qualcomm's hardware for United States variants). Utilizing Samsung's latest 64-layer 512-gigabit (Gb) V-NAND chips, the new 512GB eUFS package provides unparalleled storage capacity and outstanding performance for upcoming flagship smartphones and tablets. Although most flagships stop at 128 GB these days, the tech giant continues its push in this market by starting to manufacture the first 512 GB eUFS embedded storage solution. "By assuring an early, stable supply of this advanced embedded storage, Samsung is taking a big step forward in contributing to timely launches of next-generation mobile devices by mobile manufacturers around the world".

This doubles the density of Samsung's previous 48-layer V-NAND-based 256GB eUFS, and in the same amount of space as the 256GB package.

Of course Samsung's and other Android phones sometimes have the option of expandable storage through a MicroSD chip, but internal storage has its benefits. Obviously, these chips are being used in more than just mobile phones, since SSDs and high-performance removable memory cards also take advantage of their performance and reliability. Although only claims for the moment, Samsung said it will be able to store 130 10 minute 4K Ultra HD video clips, ten times as many as a 64 GB eUFS.

Australia Launches Inquiry Into Google, Facebook 'Net Impact
According to Sims, the ACCC will openly study the digital platforms to understand how they influence media in Australia. Facebook added that they take the role of media ecosystem seriously and they are ready for the probe.

Samsung is promising speeds of 860MB/s while reading and 255 MB/s while writing the data. That's eight times faster than a microSD card and equivalent to transferring 5GB of HD video to an SSD in six seconds.

For random operations, the new eUFS can read 42,000 IOPS and write 40,000 IOPS. No, not really. That's why Samsung says it is going to steadily increase its production volume for both 512 GB and 256 GB V-NAND chips. Tell us your thoughts down in the comments.
