  • San Marcos Police Department Officer Ken Copeland

The veteran officer with the San Marcos, Texas, police department was shot and killed in the line of duty Monday afternoon while trying to serve an arrest warrant.

Officials did not disclose the identity of the suspect nor the charge for which he was wanted.

The officer was taken to Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos and pronounced dead at 3:50 p.m.

A suspect was taken into custody after he surrendered to law enforcement following the shootout. It's unknown if the injury was from an officer's gun or his own. Copeland and other officers present were shot at by the suspect, "much like in an ambush type of situation".

"Ken's a hero", Stapp told reporters. He worked just about every day off to provide for his kids and because he knows we're shorthanded and we need the help. Copeland is succeeded by his wife and four sons. "His picture is hanging in different parts of this police department because everyone here loved him", according to ABC affiliate KUVE.

Despite wearing protective gear, the shots struck the officer.

Gov. Greg Abbott issued his condolences to the slain cop's family and promised the shooter will receive "swift justice".

A nearby elementary school was placed on lock down and students who were outside at the time waiting to be picked up were brought back inside the building. "I ask that all Texans continue to join Cecilia and I in prayer for officer Copeland's family during this hard time". "I think you have to say it is a one-off".

The officer is the 119th law enforcement official to be killed in the line of duty this year, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. We have to appreciate the fine men and women that are out there serving the public's interest.
