U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow issued the following statement upon Senate confirmation of Kirstjen Nielsen as Homeland Security Secretary.

Nielsen previously served as chief of staff to Kelly and as senior legislative policy director for the department's Transportation and Security Administration (TSA). She has served as principal deputy White House chief of staff, reporting to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, since September 6.

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee and a onetime prospect for the DHS top job, said, "I am confident that Kirstjen's mission-focused style of leadership will help her succeed in leading the men and women of DHS and ensuring we reform and improve the Department".

Despite increasing prominence in the national conversation, cybersecurity was a secondary topic during Nielsen's confirmation hearing.

"Why should we believe that, as smart as you are, and as well-spoken as you are, that someone who, as far as I know, never led an organization of even 100 people, much less 240,000, is ready to take on this responsibility?" Sen.

Nielsen will take over for Acting Secretary Elaine Duke, and will be sworn-in sometime in the coming days.

Throughout her confirmation process, Ms. Nielsen failed to demonstrate that she would provide the steady experienced leadership - free from political interference from the White House - that the department needs.

And in a statement released after the Senate confirmed Nielsen, Sen. "She has yet to acknowledge the overwhelming scientific consensus that human behavior contributes to climate change, even as states like California face the increasing threats of wildfires, floods, and rising sea levels".

The newly confirmed secretary also pledged during her confirmation hearing to continue implementing Trump's aggressive immigration agenda.

In light of those [court] decisions, then DHS-Secretary Kelly [Kelly left DHS on July 31 to become White House chief of staff] rescinded DAPA and the expansion of DACA on June 15, 2017.

The Justice Department under Sessions, and DHS under Nielsen, will share in enforcing different portions of immigration law.
