  • Akayed Ullah indicted for New York subway bomb attack

The suspect accused of attempting to bomb a NY subway transit way was indicted by a grand jury on six federal charges Wednesday stemming from the botched December 11 pipe bomb attack.

The Bangladeshi man accused of attempting a suicide bombing in a busy New York City commuter hub in the name of Islamic State in December was indicted on U.S. terrorism charges by a grand jury on Wednesday.

Akayed detonated a homemade bomb strapped to his body at the Port Authority Bus Terminal on December 11, 2017. He remains held without bail at a lockup next to the federal court complex in lower Manhattan.

Federal public defender Amy Gallicchio, Ullah's attorney, spoke to reporters outside the courthouse.

"In selecting this time and place, Ullah's alleged goal in the Port Authority bombing was painfully clear: to inflict as much damage as possible, and to strike fear into the hearts of New Yorkers in the name of ISIS", U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said when announcing the indictment. Ullah responded: "At this moment, not guilty".

The judge asked Ullah if he had seen the six-count indictment and had the opportunity to speak with his lawyers about it. And she said he needed some of the dressing on his wounds changed.

China's surging exports widen trade surplus with US
The world's second-largest economy reported strong overall trade data for 2017. Customs is expected to release dollar-denominated trade data later on Friday.

Ullah suffered lacerations and burns to his hand and stomach in the bombing, authorities said.

Gallicchio said the defense would need 90 days to review discovery material in the case, which Turner said includes video of Ullah allegedly carrying out the attack, phone records, financial records, travel records and message logs from his electronic devices. He has not yet set a trial date.

Authorities said Ullah mentioned President Donald Trump in a Facebook post on the morning of the attack, which read, "Trump you failed to protect your nation". The president later demanded tightened immigration rules.

Prosecutors said Ullah wanted to cause carnage to avenge USA aggression toward the Islamic State group.

Kim said Ullah picked his target and timed his attack in order to "maximize human casualties."The bomb, however, did not fully explode".
