Browns hiring Packers executive Eliot Wolf

The Browns made official Wednesday the additions of Eliot Wolf and Alonzo Highsmith to the personnel department led by general manager John Dorsey.

The 35-year-old Wolf met with Dorsey on Tuesday after the Packers elected to hire Brian Gutekunst as their general manager.

The Browns are offering a four-year contract, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, citing a source.

Both Wolf and Highsmith have a history of working with new Cleveland general manager John Dorsey, who worked in the Green Bay front office from 1991-1998 and 2000-2012.

"He will be a GM really quick, so there's going to be a time when he's not here, and we're going to have to continue to move on", Gutekunst said Monday, according to Bill Huber of Packer Report.

It's a big loss for Green Bay, and potentially another sign that their grip on the NFC North is slipping.

They have resources, with 12 draft picks, including five in the first two rounds, and an expected $100 million in salary cap space.

"I was a little bit surprised that Eliot Wolf didn't get the job", he said.

Highsmith, meanwhile, spent 19 years in the Packers' personnel department. He was selected by the Houston Oilers with the No. 3 overall pick of the 1987 NFL Draft and spent six seasons playing in the NFL.

"This is going to be an exciting challenge", Highsmith said.

"Obviously, the people up there (Green Bay) don't think he's worthy, or they would've hired him", Ron Wolf told ESPN earlier this week.

Still, a part of me will always wonder what might have been.

All three worked with the Chiefs under Dorsey, who was surprisingly let go by the team in June after four seasons. "Some of my fondest memories in football were playing the Browns in the playoffs one year and the fans throwing dog bones at us so we had to turn around and play that series at the opposite end zone".

The Browns also said Ken Kovash, a vice president of player personnel the past two seasons, will transition to a role in the club's strategy department under Paul DePodesta.

The team parted ways after a season with senior personnel executive Ryan Grigson, the former GM of the Colts, and added Jimmy Noel as assistant director of pro scouting, Matt Donahoe as a scout and Dan Zegers as personnel coordinator.

The foundation of the Packers' success is built in the personnel room.
