In a move with major impact on its users and on brands, Facebook said Thursday it is changing algorithm for the News Feed to de-emphasize posts or what it calls "public content-posts from businesses, brands and media" publishers.

Lastly, Zuckerberg notes that he expects these changes to result in a lower user engagement on the social network, but even if people spend less time on Facebook, the time they do spend will be more meaningful.

Facebook's decision to refocus its news feed to show more posts from friendsand fewer posts from brands and publishers is a seismic shift with the potential to strike a major blow to publishers and businesses. Instead, Facebook wants people to see more stuff from friends, family and other people they are likely to have "meaningful" conversations with - something the company laments has been lost in the sea of videos, news stories (real and fake), and viral quizzes on which "Big Bang Theory" character you are.

"It could benefit Google and they're always eager for more timely news", she said.

Those changes mean fewer posts from businesses and publications, and more posts from friends and family.

While Mr Zuckerberg described the move as being created to bring people closer together and foster more "meaningful social interactions", analysts noted that it comes amid criticism of the world's leading social network on various fronts.

Facebook would much rather make changes on its own than have its hand forced by regulators - or to see disillusioned users move on to other, newer platforms.

Met Eireann issues two weather warnings as storm Eleanor heads for Tipperary
The storm has now moved to the North Sea and forecasters predict that winds are likely to slow as the day goes on (January 3). As of Wednesday morning a few hundred people in Notts were without power to their homes following strong winds overnight.

Still, in some ways, this new focus takes Facebook back to its roots, having started as a way to connect students on college campuses before eventually allowing all people to join in 2006. Facebook for addressing the issue has brought in many changes.

"Maybe (news organizations) need to get more involved in community groups and posting news within those groups, or interacting more directly with interest groups within Facebook", he said. Investors are concerned that this could hit Facebook's advertising figures. The News Feed is a firehose of traffic, and publishers are about to see that completely cut off. "We can feel more connected and less lonely, and that correlates with long-term measures of happiness and health".

"Facebook has a lot of work to do - whether it's protecting our community from abuse and hate, defending against interference by nation states, or making sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent", he wrote. If you're confident and content with your life, then seeing a friend or family member with a smile on their face could make you happy too.

The biggest change in years to Facebook's main interface - its News Feed - is a direct result of the social network's CEO's having kids and rethinking what he wants his legacy to be.

And the public content more seen would be permitted on the same footings that it should be such to boost meaningful and healthy people to people interactions. Zuckerberg believes passively watching videos may not be as good even if they are informative or entertaining. Last year, NY magazine reported on a study that found that "people who see an article from a trusted sharer, but one written by an unknown media source, have much more trust in the information than people who see the same article from a reputable media source shared by a person they do not trust".

Facebook's focus used to be connecting people.
