  • Flood-prone areas prepare for Friday's heavy rain, melting snow

New snow and sleet accumulation of 8 to 12 inches is possible, the Weather Service said.

Due to rainfall and melting snow, there is a Flood Watch in effect for much of New England starting at 6 a.m. and ending Saturday afternoon.

Monday night, the low will be around minus 1 with mostly clear skies, according to the weather service. In addition, driving conditions after the rain stops are expected to be hard, as temperatures are expected to drop once again come late Saturday/earlySunday, resulting in flooded streets becoming encrusted with heavy patches of ice.

Greater Lowell will see a high near 60 degrees Friday, with rain, thunderstorms and areas of fog, according to the National Weather Service. "Buffalo, Cayuga, Cazenovia and Cattaraugus creeks are traditionally the most susceptible to ice jam flooding".

Flood watches were scheduled to continue into Saturday afternoon in numerous same counties along with Preston County. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

WEDNESDAY: Snow ends early.

Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing by 1 to 3 p.m. for Western New York, including Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Jamestown. Meteorologist Sarah Wroblewski said she expects the warning to be extended toward the coast as the cold front moves east. Temperatures will drop from the upper 20's for tailgaters to the low 20's by the time that Pats are celebrating their victory.

Saturday morning into early afternoon, however, that rain could turn into freezing rain and sleet.

The forecast calls for mixed precipitation, snow accumulation of up to two inches and ice accumulation of up to one-tenth of an inch.
