Liverpool could replace Coutinho with AC Milan's Suso

In the end, the player's determination to quit Anfield for the Nou Camp proved telling - but Liverpool are hoping to avoid a repeat scenario with his global teammate by offering Firmino what is described as a "contract for life".

Forward Salah, the Reds' top scorer with 23 goals in all competitions this season, has missed the last two matches because of a groin problem.

Coutinho has been a scourge of City in recent seasons, scoring winners at Anfield in 2014 and '15, and being the driving force behind Liverpool's thrilling 4-1 win over City at Etihad Stadium in November 2015.

The man who remains at Liverpool took to social media to express his sadness at no longer being able to work with Coutinho.

I have always said that it is a dream that I am living and I am very happy to be here.

Firmino recently wrote on Instagram about how the club was different without his compatriot Coutinho.

Five-star Barcelona cruise through in Copa del Rey
Despite losing 2-1 at Villarreal, who are now sixth in La Liga, Leganes progressed on away goals having won the first leg 1-0. Celta visited Catalonia last month in the league, with the game ending 2-2, and another draw can be backed at 27/4 (7 .75).

The 25-year-old will grace the pitch with the world's greatest player in the eyes of many, and a former team-§mate whom he came so close to winning the Premier League title with, Luis Suarez.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is effusive in his praise of the Brazil global; protective too, as witnessed by his defence of Coutinho when the then delicate subject of Barcelona cropped up on Sky after Liverpool's win at Bournemouth last month.

The two clubs agreed a €55m deal for the Guinea global to move to Anfield after the World Cup finals in Russian Federation this summer.

Oxlade-Chamberlain admits Coutinho's absence from the Liverpool midfield represents "an opportunity for me, just as it is for the rest of the boys who want to play there".

Of course, Coutinho will be a loss to Liverpool and the Premier League for that matter, but Jurgen Klopp now has serious funds at his disposal to strengthen his squad.

"There have been signs that City, particularly the centre backs - not so much John Stones but (Nicolas) Otamendi or (Eliaquim) Mangala - you can press certain players and nick the ball off them".
