New study shows most people who try cigarettes become regular smokers

But a recent study has revealed that smoking even one cigarette for the first time can make more than two-thirds of people addicts.

After the research, the team compared data collected from the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand and found that around 60.3 percent people had tried smoking at some point of their lifetime and around 68.9 per cent of people developed a daily habit of smoking.

Caught unawares by the drive launched by the Delhi Police, many people who were smoking casually at market places, bus stands, metro stations in South Delhi had to shell out Rs 200 for smoking in a public place.

Of the respondents, 60.3% said they had tried a cigarette, with 68.9% of those admitting they had progressed to daily smoking.

Studies show that most smokers want to quit, and FDA Center for Tobacco Products Director Mitch Zeller says that's the hinge of a new campaign.

It is no secret that cigarettes are highly addictive. Data were analysed to calculate the conversion rate from ever trying a cigarette to ever smoking daily.

Researchers from Queen Mary University of London and the University of Glasgow found that there is a strong correlation between experimenting with cigarettes and becoming a regular smoker rather than sticking to occasional smoking. The experts believed that the research might have been skewed because people who smoked were less likely to respond the surveys than those who didn't smoke.

It is like getting influencing from those who had made cigarette smoking a habit for them.

Young people in the United Kingdom are decreasing from the 2010 to the 2016.

"Tobacco use starts in childhood for two-thirds of smokers in the United Kingdom, and this study suggests that even trying a cigarette becomes regular use in most cases", she added.

However, Deborah Arnott, chief executive of the charity Action on Smoking and Health stated that government now should come up with strict regulation om tobacco sales. According to her, authorities are "refusing" to introduce licensing for tobacco retailers, although both "the public and retailers" actively support this strategy.
