Severe winter weather has had a tremendous impact on blood donations already this year.

"Even temporary disruptions to blood and platelet donations can diminish the availability for hospital patients", says Kelly Isenor, a spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Red Cross Blood Services Region. More than 150 blood drives were forced to cancel.

With January being National Blood Donor Month, the American Red Cross hopes blood and platelet donors of all blood types make an appointment to help the shortage. The American Red Cross says these affected more than 28,000 fewer donations than needed in November and December.

Platelet and type O negative and B negative blood donations - in particular - are critically needed right now. The Red Cross' Danvers facility on Rosewood Drive is open every day for the rest of the month.

A recent press released stated donations during the holiday season were lower than anticipated, placing the Central Texas blood supply at a "dangerously low" level.

"Hospitals don't take snow days, and neither do we", said Dawn Kaiser, director of donor services for Michigan Blood. Students can donate once they're 16 years old and a lot of blood comes from high schools. They can register using a free Blood Donor app available from redcrossblood.org, on the website itself or by calling 800-733-2767. "So when we can cover our hospital needs we like to help out other hospitals in need", said Busta.

Type O negative: The blood type that can be transfused to nearly everyone and is what doctors reach for in trauma situations.

Type AB: The plasma type that can be transfused to nearly everyone and can be donated through a platelet or plasma donation, where available, or during a regular blood donation.

About the American Red Cross:The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides worldwide humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families.
