Kirk Herbstreit, the former Ohio State QB and current ESPN college football analyst, called Jackson the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) in a social media post Saturday. No cause was given.

Jackson is survived by his wife of 63 years, Turi Ann, three children and three grandchildren.

Jackson was considered the voice of college football for nearly 50 years getting his first start in broadcasting in 1952 calling games for Washington State on the radio. "He could do anything and loved doing it". Jackson said the origin of the phrase came from his great-grandfather. But it was no catchphrase.

"He said, 'Never be afraid to turn a phrase". "That's how Keith talked".

In 1987, Sports Illustrated chronicled some of Jackson's most popular descriptions. He said: "I'm a goofy old goat. And the older I got the more willing I was to go back into the Southern vernacular because some of it's amusing", Jackson said.

Jackson enjoyed what he referred to as "the purity of college football". I can't think of the sport without hearing those two words uttered by that voice. From 1969 to 2006 he was the soundtrack for college football with his distinctive baritone voice.

"THE voice of college football and one of the most iconic voices of all time, RIP Keith Jackson".

Three years later, it was another MI game that served as a legendary moment for Jackson. Keith Jackson wrote his own job description and it was simple: "Educate, illuminate and then get the hell out of the way". Thank you for all of the incredible Saturday's'. Jackson left the world on Friday but his calls, his legacy and his memory will never leave the people he touched for so many years as the voice of college football. He finally called it a career after describing the Texas-Southern California national championship game at the Rose Bowl in early 2006. "He's going for the cornerrrr". He named the Rose Bowl "The Granddaddy of Them All". He was the first play-by-play announcer for ABC's Monday Night Football, and he appeared on Wide World of Sports.

"The NCAA can make anybody cynical", Jackson once told Sports Illustrated.

Probably not since, if I couldn't bring myself to do something as basic as say hello, what could I possibly inquire of him that wouldn't have sounded painfully awkward? "All I know is that I'll go home, have a nice bowl of soup, sleep in tomorrow and if the weather's good, maybe play some golf".

Forever remembered for his signature "Whoa, Nellie" call on ABC Sports, Jackson was one of the most popular play-by-play personalities in the business. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Turi Ann, and his family".

Funeral arrangements for Jackson have not yet been announced.
