  • Toronto schoolgirl hijab attack never happened, police say

An 11-year-old Toronto girl who claimed she was attacked because of her hijab fabricated the story, according to local police.

On Monday, police said their investigation had concluded, with no charges laid and no consequences for the girl.

"In this case, Toronto Police have investigated and determined that the events described did not happen", Tory said in a statement.

She said the man pulled off the hood to her jacket and cut off her hijab with a pair of scissors before fleeing the area.

Reports of the hijab cutting garnered worldwide attention, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemning the alleged attack. She also said the man had returned a short time later and had continued to cut her hijab from behind before smiling and running away.

Pugash said the investigation is complete and that they don't "anticipate anything further".

"Investigators worked extremely hard since the allegations on Friday".

It certainly sounds as if the girl who made the report has admitted she made it up, though the story doesn't quite say that. It seems fair to ask where an 11-year-old got the idea that she would be the target of such an attack.

He said police wouldn't take a step like this unless they were absolutely confident.

He added that it is "very unusual" for someone to make false allegations of this type and said he hopes it will not discourage others from coming forward. "And we, as community members, all we want to do is think about this young girl - give her support - we don't want her to be vilified", said Elghawaby.

In a press conference at the girl's school on Friday, she told reporters that she felt "confused, scared and terrified" when seeing the man behind her and that she is afraid to walk to class.

Members of the school board released a brief statement on the incident, saying they are "very thankful that this assault did not in fact happen".
