Evans' family are still based in the north west and it is thought his preference would be to remain in the area.

United sold Evans to West Brom for £6 million rising to £8 million in August 2015, since when he has impressed for club and country.

Former Man Utd defender Evans nearly moved to Man City from West Brom in the summer, but a deal fell through and City are believed to be back in for the 30-year-old Northern Ireland worldwide.

Everton are among a number of other suitors who have a watching interest in Evans but there is recognition that they could not compete with City or Arsenal for the 30-year-old, who wants European football and the chance to compete at the top again.

The Frenchman refused to confirm whether the Gunners retain an interest in Evans, who first emerged as a target for his side and Premier League pacesetters City during the summer window.

Evans, 26, is seen by Man City boss Pep Guardiola as a viable replacement for Vincent Kompany, who has yet to prove his long-term fitness at the Etihad, while Wenger believes the the West Brom man would be a valuable addition to his three-man defence.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger may be willing to ask his club to pay £25m to take the 30-year-old Northern Ireland worldwide to Emirates Stadium. "I think the best thing is not to talk", he said.

"I don't know if Manchester City is in for anybody, I don't know their policy", Wenger said.

"But we know that if the decision comes down to the financial point of view, we'll be second best to Manchester City".
