  • A student at Salvador B. Castro Middle School in Los Angeles was comforted after the shooting Thursday

NBC reports that a 12-year-old female student was arrested for a shooting inside the Sal Castro Middle School on Thurs. morning that left a boy, 15, shot in the head with critical injuries, and four others with less severe injuries. The female victim had a gunshot wound to the wrist and was in fair condition.

The shooting was reported just before 9 a.m. PT and within minutes a 12-year-old girl was taken into custody without incident. "I had the gun in my backpack and I didn't know it was loaded and my backpack fell and the gun went off,"' he said. She said she had been texting her daughter, but hadn't heard back.

ABC News was told by a pupil from the school that he thought the girl who allegedly fired the gun believed it was a toy.

The shooting left one teenager critically wounded and three other children injured. Her grandmother spoke briefly with KABC.

Police haven't said from where the girl got the semi-automatic handgun or why she brought it to the downtown campus.

Aerial video on local television showed a girl being led out of the school in handcuffs.

Students are to be dismissed on the school's regular schedule, but parents can pick up their children earlier if they wish.

"One of the main missions.is the issue of finding out how a young person had access to a weapon", Los Angeles School Police Chief Steve Zipperman said. The student faces two charges of murder and 12 counts of first degree assault, authorities said.

"I stayed quiet and then we started seeing students run", she said.

The school's campus was placed on lockdown but most classes continued.

Castro has about 365 students in Grades 6 to 8; nearly all are Hispanic and many come from low-income families.

Questions of how and why the gun ended up at the school remain.

One student says Salvador B. Castro Middle School had already conducted security searches that morning.

A month later, a student died from a shooting at Reseda High School.

Many parents who raced to the school were stuck waiting at this nearby softball field for hours. "I just want my daughter".

"I'm anxious and I want her to be released already". I wanted do so many things'.

"They do it every once in a while", she said.

While school shootings are always alarming, James Alan Fox, a professor of criminology, law and public policy at Northeastern University says schools are, by and large, safe. He also said that after the incident, he learned that his daughter was bullied at school. "I fear for my son's life".

"I went insane. I couldn't handle it", he told ABC News.

"As a parent, this is everyone's worst-case nightmare - a worst-case scenario and a nightmare for all of us", Robert Arcos, commanding officer of the Los Angeles Police Department's Operations-Central Bureau, told reporters Thursday.

It wasn't immediately clear whether she was the student in custody, whom police hadn't formally declared a suspect.

However, they aren't unheard of.

"She shot a girl and a boy", he wrote.

"Not safe, not safe, very insecure", she said. She had seen news of the shooting on TV and came to get her daughter, who is a student at the middle school.

In general, women are less violent than men - accounting for just 10 to 13 per cent of all homicides. "They thought it was a fake gun". They were being patted down by police before being released, apparently as a precautionary measure.

A 15-year-old girl was struck in the wrist by a bullet.

There are a few other examples including 30-year-old Laurie Dann. But he stressed that the mental well-being of other students on campus was the immediate priority. The 16-year-old killed a principal and a custodian and injured eight children.

In 2010, a biology professor at the University of Alabama shot six of her colleagues. Jimmy attends Belmont High School, which is across the street. Deaths in school shootings numbered 154, or less than 0.5%.
