  • The spheres and Day 1 building at Amazon’s downtown Seattle campus. Layoffs are coming at Amazon after a hiring binge that took the company’s Seattle head count to more than 40,000 people from just 5,000 in 2010

The first report of this appeared in the Seattle Times that said the company was cutting job while managing out others due to consolidating retail operations.

According to the Seattle Times sources have told them that the jobs cut at the online retail giant will number around the low hundreds and will be primarily focused on Amazon's consumer retail businesses.

The corporate downsizing notwithstanding, Amazon said Monday it has more than 4,000 job listings posted in Seattle - an increase of almost a quarter from the multi-year low in January.

The company hired 130,000 people worldwide previous year, with its full-time and part-time headcount rising 66% from 2016 to 566,000 in 2017.

Amazon said a year ago that it planned to create 100,000 jobs in the U.S. as it bulks up fulfillment centres and adds more customer service representatives.

Amazon has acknowledged the cuts.

Amazon confirmed that cuts were taking place, saying in a statement that it was "making head count adjustments across the company". For the employees affected, the company works trying to find new roles in areas where hiring is taking place. Amazon now has more than 4,000 job listings on its site for Seattle.

Shares were up 3.5 percent, trading at 1,386.23 United States dollars, as of 12:50 (GMT). Along with the cuts, Amazon has now mandated that employees who are responsible for other supervisors, must also have four employees reporting to them.

"Amazon has a problem right now with overpopulation", said one engineer at the company.

The last few years have been good for Amazon. Amazon has said the city that wins will receive over $5 billion in investments and 50,000 job openings.

"We use our performance-management process to recognize talent, help employees develop their skills, and in some cases, make employees aware that they are underperforming", a spokesman said.
