At 9.40am, speaker P Dhanapal unveiled the 7ft long and 5ft wide portrait painted by former Government Arts College principal R Mathiazhagan.

"It could never have been the intention of the then speakers to hang portraits of convicts, culprits or persons convicted of offences involving moral turpitude like corruption", the petitioner said.

The portrait was unveiled in the presence of Chief Minister K. Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and other state ministers.

A portrait of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was unveiled at the Legislative Assembly hall on Monday, amid boycott by the Opposition parties. DMK boycotted the ceremony.

Congress MLA S Vijayadharani, representing Vilavancode, has invited trouble for hailing the unveiling of the portrait.

DMK's MK Stalin terming Monday as "black day" said, "This move has brought down the dignity and sanctity of the House".

The petition also noted that DMK had already moved a plea in the High Court seeking to remove the name and photos of Jayalalithaa from government offices, buildings, public sector undertakings and government schemes - a case that is still pending.

You can now buy your Valentine a £5000 bouquet of roses
Despite all of the love, 53 percent of women said they would end their relationship if they didn't get anything on February 14th. More than half of US consumers, or 55%, plan to celebrate Valentine's Day in some way this year.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May previous year to be the chief guest for the unveiling.

Referring to the disproportionate assets case in which the Supreme Court had abated proceedings against Jayalalithaa following her death on December 5, 2016, he claimed the move went against Constitution and the apex court judgement.

Observing that Ms Jayalalithaa has grabbed the world's attention and has created historyin this historic Assembly, he said he felt as if she was personally blessing the occasion.

However, the BJP in Tamil Nadu begged to differ with its state president Tamilisai Soundararajan saying that notwithstanding the verdict, there was nothing wrong in unveiling the portrait as Jayalalithaa, as the chief minister, had worked for the state's welfare.

Ms Jayalalithaa's portrait was the 11th leader to adorn the walls of the Assembly.

"This assurance and this idea have been expressed to the party high command when our chief minister and the deputy chief minister and we were seated", Mr Sengottaiyan said.

On the other side, portraits of former chief ministers Rajaji, K Kamaraj, C N Annadurai, M G Ramachandran and saint- poet Thiruvalluvar are featured.
