"This person was on Ukrainian territory illegally and therefore, in compliance with all legal procedures, he was returned to the country from where he arrived", border service spokesman Oleh Slobodyan said in a post on Facebook.

Polish border police confirmed in a statement that Saakashvili had arrived in Warsaw and that "the basis for his admission into Poland was based on an application submitted by the National Migration Service of Ukraine to the commander-in-chief of Poland's border guards".

"This is not a president and not a man".

Saakashvili said that he "was attacked in Kiev by masked people, who seized him, threatened him and took him to Poland on board a private plane". The former president, who ruled Georgia for nine years until 2013, also faces charges in Ukraine relating to alleged involvement in a Russian plot to destabilise the country, charges he also denies.

Upon his arrival in Poland, Saakashvili said his deportation showed Poroshenko's weakness.

The politician said that he was staying in a hotel in Poland, and that the Polish authorities had provided him with bodyguards.

At the same time, both the Ukrainian prosecution service and the Ukrainian security services (SBU), quoted by global agencies, denied involvement in Saakashvili's detention and said they had "no information about the whereabouts of the former President of Georgia".

Poroshenko offered Saakashvili a job in his post-revolution administration and eventually settled on granting his former university classmate Ukrainian citizenship and the governorship of Odessa, the country's most important economic region. "Officials used force to apprehend Saakashvili and had to protect themselves from his supporters, he said", reported Bloomberg.

Saakashvili was arrested at a restaurant by several men in military uniforms on Monday, according to his spokesperson and two videos posted on his Facebook page.

Saakashvili is wanted in Georgia on embezzlement charges that he says are politically motivated. The authorities accuse him of assisting a criminal organisation, which he calls a fabricated allegation to undermine his campaign to unseat Poroshenko. "We will triumph for sure".

"We are going to Borispol airport".
