  • IDC says Google shipped 3.9 million Pixel devices in 2017

Francisco Jeronimo, the IDC research director that revealed the figure above, noted that shipments have actually doubled, but as The Verge's Vlad Savov points out it's still less than the iPhones sold in a week.

Google shipped 3.9 million Pixel and Pixel 2 devices in 2017 which is almost double the units it sold in 2016 but a tiny fraction of the global smartphone market that numbers 1.5 billion units. That's good, in that it is double the previous year's shipments. Based on its most recent sales figures, Apple was selling nearly 850,000 iPhones each day in the first quarter of 2018.

Google launched the first Pixel phone in October 2016 and followed it up with the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

As hinted above, Google could have more success in attracting consumers by expanding the availability of the Pixel line. In addition, there are 499 Apple Stores spread out in 22 countries, while Google relies on occasional pop-ups and its online Google Store, with no constant physical retail presence.

Even with those relatively paltry sales numbers, Google also dealt with a lot of Pixel stock issues in 2017.

Why Can't Google Pixel Catch Up To The iPhone? Google has worked to remedy the problems although according to Tim, you should just bypass the Pixel 2 XL and go for the smaller Pixel 2. Google now has access to HTC's intellectual property to support the Pixel smartphone family.

Do you own one of the 3.9 million Pixel phones that Google shipped in 2017?

Pixel smartphone sales are certainly heading in the right direction, validating the company's recent push into making Google hardware.
