  • Groundhog Staten Island Chuck predicts an early spring

The idea is, the groundhog wakes up from hibernation on the 2nd, and if it sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter.

Shivering in the cold, Punsxutawney Phil saw his shadow, meaning six more weeks of winter are ahead.

Since 1887, the groundhog has seen his shadow 103 times, to forecast a longer winter, and not seen it 18 times, to predict an early spring. During the Groundhog Day Picnic, which kicks off around 6:00 a.m. ET, Phil will share his prediction with his Inner Circle, who will then translate for thousands of viewers.

The standing Punxsutawney Groundhog Club president is the only person able to interpret Phil's official language known as "Groundhogese". That's in spite of forecasts that predicted a cloudy, shadow-less morning.

February 2 marks the 132nd Groundhog Day, and Pennsylvania resident prognosticating rodent will emerge from his temporary home on Gobbler's Knob at sunrise. Welcome to six more weeks of winter. No such luck, it would seem; according to Phil and his good friend Gen. Beauregard Lee in Georgia, we've still got a bit more Winter to go this year.

According to information compiled by the National Centers for Environmental Information, Phil has struggled in recent years to accurately predict the weather.

Trump Plan Seeks New Nuclear Weapons, Citing Russia
Two weeks ago, Mr Mount said the leaked review translates Mr Trump's impulses into an order for new, more usable nuclear options. Washington uses its traditional anti-Russian rhetoric to justify its own " large-scale nuclear weapons buildup ", it added.

It also says Phil's predictions are 100 percent accurate when in reality his success rate has only been 20 percent in the last 30 years.

If Phil didn't see his shadow, it would have been an early spring.

Records dating to 1887 show Phil has now predicted more winter 103 times while forecasting an early spring just 18 times - including a year ago.

Punxitawney Phil's accuracy rate is around 39 percent. The German settlers switched to groundhogs when the settlers noticed a surplus of the creatures in Pennsylvania.

The tradition grew in popularity in 1993 with the release of the comedy "Groundhog Day", starring Bill Murray.

The origin of Groundhog Day can be traced to Candlemas, the ancient European celebration of the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.
