St. Mary's Maternity Services is partnering with the American Heart Association to raise awareness of congenital heart defects through the AHA's "Little Hats, Big Hearts" initiative.

February is heart month and many health organizations and local students will be raising awareness on heart disease.

You can control some risk factors such as blood pressure, smoking, cholesterol and lack of regular physical activity. According to Brandt, high blood pressure affects a lot more than just your heart. On this day, it's encouraged to wear red to not only advocate for more research and action to be taken towards women's health, but also in honor of those who have been affected by this bad disease. "February is the flawless time to learn more about your heart health and make positive lifestyle changes".

Valentine's Day isn't the only day in February where hearts are important.

Cathy Brandt, Corporate Events Director for northeast Iowa, says the AHA is beginning to close the gap between heart disease and America's number two killer - all cancers combined. The hats were knit by volunteers as part of the Go Red For Women Campaign.

The American Heart Association suggests something red.

1 killer of women - claiming the lives of one in three women - cardiovascular diseases make people consider that a woman they know and love might be affected at any age. While cardiovascular diseases kill almost one woman every 80 seconds, 80 percent of these cases can be prevented with education and action. Go Red For Women is nationally sponsored by Macy's and CVS Health; and locally by New York City Goes Red Sponsors, Northwell Health and the Elizabeth Elting Foundation.

February is American Heart Month and the goal is to bring awareness to heart health.

The Cayman Heart Fund is asking people to wear red on Friday in school, at work and around the neighborhood to raise funds for the cause.
