Olympic women's slalom postponed to Friday

  • Bad weather forces rescheduling of women's giant slalom event at PyeongChang

Based on the sport's original 11-event program for South Korea, Shiffrin would have raced on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday in Week 1, with full days off to help in the transition from her preferred technical events of slalom and giant slalom to the speed events. "It's a consideration, absolutely".

Charlie Guest will need to wait two more days to make her Olympic debut while Alex Tilley will be in action tomorrow if conditions allow the already-rescheduled Giant Slalom to take place.

The Yongpyong resort is owned by the Unification Church, whose adherents are known as Moonies, and has hosted men's technical World Cup races four times since 1998.

Running races on separate mountains on the same day is hardly ideal, however, especially when one, the men's downhill, is the marquee event of Alpine skiing at the Games.

Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud questioned the fairness of the downhill run for the men's combined after organisers finally got the Alpine skiing programme underway at the Pyeongchang Olympics after two days of weather postponements on Tuesday.

The men's super-G, originally set for Thursday, has been switched to Friday.

"It is a very heavy load", said Shiffrin's coach, Mike Day.

Shiffrin feels under no pressure to medal as a favourite. "I could never imagine myself even in the same sentence as Michael Phelps ".

On Wednesday at Yongpyong, snow was falling and wind blowing this way and that.

The latest schedule change came Monday, when the temperature was 5 degrees and the women's giant slalom was shelved less than three hours before it was supposed to start.

Snowboarding great Shaun White brilliantly won his third Olympic gold today at the Pyeongchang Winter Games.

"I've spent a lot of today walking backwards", said British Olympics visitor Elliott Edmonson.

After several delays in the schedule, the event was eventually called off as the hurricane-like winds made it impossible for the athletes, including the U.S. rising star Mikaela Shiffrin, to compete in such weather conditions, reports Efe.

"It is definitely unfortunate that we weren't able to race today, but it is important we have a fair race for all of the athletes and today's conditions would definitely not have been fair", Shiffrin said.
