Proteas down India in nail-biting fourth ODI

15 February, 2018, 07:33 | Author: Joan Malone
  • Virat Kohli led team India have been unbeatable in the series so far with bowlers in top form

Laura Wolvaardt and Mignon du Preez, who both struck half-centuries, played protagonists in South Africa's first win in the three-match series, aided by a brisk 41-run cameo from captain Dane van Niekerk and India's sloppiness in the end overs of their 240-run defence. South Africa won by 80 runs.

That South Africa benefited from the two weather delays was not in dispute.

India will still be favoured to win the series, but South Africa's cause suddenly doesn't look as hopeless as it did a couple of days ago. Having said that, South Africa did have a lot going for them - rain reduced their target to 202 from 28 overs, and it also meant that the Indian spinners weren't able to grip the ball as well as they would have liked.

India vs South Africa 5th ODI will be played on the fast and dead pitch of St George's park at Port Elizabeth.

It was only after Miller got a reprieve post Chahal's no-ball that Heinrich Klaasen and he went ballistic, getting the big strokes in nearly every over that took South Africa home and kept the series alive.

Addressing the press on the eve of the match, the southpaw batsman said, "We have a good momentum now from the last game we played".

"We have been very specific about our training and the team environment is really good".

Speaking after the match, India captain Virat Kohli has rued his team's misfortune but admitted that South Africa was the deserving victor as it showed a lot of character.

South Africa stand-in captain Aiden Markram was fined 20 percent of his match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate during the fourth ODI against India in Johannesburg.

Plenty of rain is forecast in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday, and it is likely to affect the match at some stage.

While about Shikhar Dhawan, Wessels said, "He looks very impressive in one-day cricket". It was the eighth century partnership for the second wicket between these two batsmen, the most in ODIs Indian cricket, drawing level with Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid who also have eight. Following these fixtures against India, South Africa will take on Australia in a four-match Test series, with the first Test scheduled to begin in Durban on March 1. His return has infused some competitiveness into the series. The strikes, in the form of Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller, frightened the daylights out of the Indian team, more so Virat Kohli, who would be wondering not what went wrong, but how so many things could go wrong in one day. "But we did a lot of homework on him over the last two-three days and that seemed to work today".

"We have obviously been training really hard".

Phehlukwayo added: "It was a game plan we had in our change room to be really positive and look to score against them". When one of them go wrong in a particular, the result goes against them.

Speaking about the preparation he said, "We have been doing good analysis and have good game plans". And given how the series has gone overall so far, they will still back themselves to pull it off.
