Now, you won't likely ever see that 2Gbps number in reality. We can expect speeds up to 10 times faster than the average 4G network, he added. While many service providers have begun working on gigabit LTE in earnest, the faster network still isn't completely deployed nationwide.

The Snapdragon X24 also offers a glimpse of our 5G future, where the internet connection to our smartphones and other connected devices is faster, more stable and available in more places.

Among the final flurry of announcements to come from Qualcomm's big 5G day was, curiously enough, a new 4G modem.

Qualcomm says the new X24 LTE modem can reach theoretical speeds of 2Gbps, wherever supported by carries, which is a significant improvement over theoretical speeds of 1.2Gbps achieved by X20 LTE modem.

In Qualcomm's modem product portfolio, the X24 sits somewhere between the X50, which is theoretically capable of 5Gbps downlink, and the current-gen X16 in phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S8, Essential Phone, and Sony Xperia XZ Premium, which maxes out at 1-1.2Gbps.

Why UK inflation at 3% could be bad news for UK stocks
A separate food price index showed inflation at 18.92 percent in January, compared with 19.42 percent in December. Even so, equities have recovered some ground, advancing for three trading sessions in a row through Tuesday.

"Qualcomm Technologies is deeply committed to helping our customers deliver next-generation 5G mobile experiences to consumers, which requires enhanced mobile broadband 5G NR connectivity enabled by 5G NR networks, mobile devices and the Snapdragon X50 5G modem", said Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager, mobile, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. Qualcomm also confirmed that the new Snapdragon X24 LTE modem would be featured in a live demonstration at the Mobile World Congress 2018 tech show in conjunction with Ericsson, Telstra and Netgear.

As the world's first commercially announced Category 20 LTE modem supporting download speeds up to 2 Gbps, the Snapdragon X24 LTE modem delivers 2x the speed of the Company's first generation Gigabit LTE modem.

The Snapdragon X24 will support 7x carrier aggregation and 4×4 MIMO on up to five aggregate carriers, which allows the modem to "utilize all spectrum assets available from a mobile operator".

It said equipment manufacturers will benefit from using the chip by offering 360-degree video, cloud computing, entertainment and "instant apps" on their devices. This unprecedented feature set is created to allow devices that feature the Snapdragon X24 LTE modem to utilize all spectrum assets available from a mobile operator, whether in licensed spectrum, or with License Assisted Access (LAA).

The X24 is still a 4G chip, but it features Full Dimension Multi-Input Multi-Output (FD-MIMO) antenna technology that is a key foundation of future 5G NR (New Radio) networks - 5G NR is the global 5G standard. In the uplink, the Snapdragon X24 LTE supports Category 20 upload speeds with 3×20 MHz CA and up to 256-QAM. Operators will also be able to use their spectrum more efficiently while delivering high speeds to consumers.
