  • BREAKING: Shooting at NSA spy centre in USA - several victims including police officer

Today, government officials said they were investigating an apparent shooting near the National Security Agency headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland, with local media reporting at least one person had been wounded and one taken into custody.

An NSA spokesman says the incident is under control. The statement said weapons were fired but "preliminary reports do not presently indicate that there are injuries attributable to gunfire".

Police surrounded and handcuffed a man after a black SUV ran into a barrier outside the National Security Agency campus while trying to get inside. They also said they do not believe the incident to be a terrorist act.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that has been affected", said a White House spokeswoman, Lindsay Walters.

In 2015, two men dressed as women tried to ram a stolen vehicle through the gate of the NSA headquarters at Fort Meade.

ABC News quoted an NSA spokesman as saying: "NSA police and local law enforcement are addressing an incident that took place this morning at one of NSA's secure vehicle entry gates".

He also now holds the US record for the most years between gold medals (12), topping Ted Ligety's previous record of eight. The American will be 35 by the time the next Winter Olympics is held in Beijing in 2022 but his focus is on a closer goal.

Washington D.C. -based WTTG/WDCA reported aerial images show a black van with body damage that apparently crashed into white security barriers near an entrance gate. The FBI was leading the investigation into the incident.

This is not the first incident to happen at an NSA security gate.

After the shooting, authorities closed a major highway in both directions, causing major backups throughout the area during rush hour.

Anne Arundel County police shared a tweet about a possible shooting just before 7:30 a.m.

The incident bears similarities to a 2015 attempted attack by two men who dressed up as women and drove their sports utility auto through the gate. One driver died at the scene after NSA police opened fire on a stolen sports utility vehicle.
