  • Sky extends Premier League rights through to 2022

After years of extraordinary revenue growth, the Premier League has sold its latest package of live TV games to Sky and BT Sport for a reduced per-match rate.

With four packs of rights totalling 128 games a season - up from 126 matches now - the deal to run from 2019 will offer Sky Sports viewers every first-pick weekend match, plus Saturday evening fixtures for the first time, all screened on Sky's dedicated Premier League channel.

BT Sport are said to be still in the hunt but Amazon's deep pockets could be the game-changer here, and over time perhaps in more way than one if it proved successful and ushered in a new approach to broadcast rights sales to match increasingly fragmenting audiences, even for football.

Sky and BT extend their agreements to broadcast live Premier League games for another three seasons.

The company said it expected to make a profit despite laying out more for Premier League games than last time.

Two packages to show 20 midweek matches are still to be sold, but experts say it is unlikely they will raise enough to top the previous rights deal.

Sky Sports will pay GBP3.58 billion for four of the seven available packages.

The total price paid for the five packages comes to £4.464 billion.

At the other end, South Africa's stand-in skipper Aiden Markram conceded India were superior than the hosts and deserved the win. One can't ignore Hardik Pandya's contribution as his all-round skill sets came into good effect.

Sky's deal means that it will show more matches than ever before.

The announcement of reduced income with two packages still to be sold was in line with analysts' predictions that the auction would not surpass the record £5.1bn Sky and BT Sport paid for the current three-year cycle.

Sky's United Kingdom chief executive Stephen van Rooyen was also pleased with the deal, with the company spending 16% less per game than in its current package.

In total BT will show 32 Saturday games per season, down from 42 now, and will pay £295m per season, down from the £320m it agreed last time. They have also won the rights to eight Saturday evening games, the first time games will be played at that time. "£9.2m vs £7.6m now".

However, Simon Leaf, a sports lawyer at Mishcon de Reya, said tech giants such as Amazon or Facebook could still be in line to win the remaining packages of 20 games per season.

BT could yet pick up some of the outstanding packages, saying in a statement that it "will continue to engage with the Premier League regarding the remaining rights".

He added: "It remains possible that a non-traditional media company will acquire an exclusive domestic live rights package to one of the "big 5" European football leagues".
