During a 13-hour marathon in Pretoria on Monday, the ANC's executive committee tried to end a prolonged standoff with Zuma, who has proposed to resign within three to six months.

"The NEC (National Executive Committee) decided.to recall its deployed Jacob Zuma", Magashule told reporters, saying the move "was taken only after exhaustive discussion on the impact such a recall would have on the country".

Zuma stands accused of more than 780 charges of fraud, money laundering and racketeering related to an arms deal scandal.

Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba said Zuma would speak at 0800 GMT and satellite trucks were in position overnight.

News24 has seen an email sent by Presidency deputy director of communications Shadi Baloyi at 16:39 on Tuesday, requesting the SAPS permit office allow media vans on the Union Buildings premises at 10:00.

Zuma says the ruling African National Congress has not followed party procedures in trying to unseat him.

As NPR's Bill Chappell reported previous year, Zuma has already survived numerous votes of confidence in South Africa's parliament.

As the new president, Ramaphosa would not have the power to grant Zuma immunity from prosecution. The Guptas and Zuma have denied any wrongdoing.

Zuma has previously said he would obey the instructions of the party but it is not clear whether he will be compliant or defiant.

Police raided the family home of businessmen friends of President Jacob Zuma on Wednesday amid a probe into allegations that the family used their links with the president to win state contracts and influence Cabinet appointments. It comes at a time when the country's ruling party, the African National Congress, has announced its decision to remove Zuma from the presidential post.

However, he would then be expected to face a confidence vote in parliament.

An opposition-backed motion of no confidence had been scheduled for February 22, but its sponsors want the vote to be moved up to this week. While appreciating President Zuma's proposal, the NEC noted that South Africa is going through a period of uncertainty and anxiety as a result of the unresolved matter of transition.

In another scandal, South Africa's top court ruled in 2016 that Zuma violated the constitution following an investigation of multi-million-dollar upgrades to his private home using state funds.

South Africa's state broadcaster, SABC, said a Gupta family member was among those detained.

The speed of Zuma's demise after two weeks of dithering by the ANC has stunned South Africa.

The power struggle over Mr. Zuma's departure has put him at loggerheads with deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, his expected successor, who is the new head of the party.
